The American Red Cross is working around the clock to help people impacted by the McKinney Wildfire in California, even as we prepare to expand relief efforts if needed.

The McKinney Fire north of Sacramento near the Oregon border has burned more than 57,000 acres in Siskiyou County in just a few days and is 0% contained. Thousands of people have been forced to leave their homes and more than 100 structures have burned. It is critical that those in the path of wildfires listen to the advice of local authorities and evacuate immediately if asked to do so. Wildfire safety information is available here.

This devastating wildfire — along with deadly flooding in Kentucky, heavy rainfall in Missouri and the recent heatwaves — are clear examples of how more intense climate-rated disasters are happening more often and are leaving behind devastation. Over the last two years, on average, the Red Cross responded to a new, major disaster every 10 days. We are seeing firsthand how families and communities are suffering and depending on us for help — with our volunteers continuously on the ground, setting up shelters, arranging for hot meals and offering comfort for people forced from their homes.

RED CROSS RESPONSE Trained Red Cross disaster workers are providing a safe place to stay, food to eat and helping people cope as they await news about whether they will have a home to return to. They are also replacing prescription medications, eyeglasses or critical medical equipment, like canes and wheelchairs, which were left behind in the rush to get to safety.

Tuesday night, the Red Cross and our partners cared for more than 70 people seeking refuge from the McKinney Fire. Some evacuees are choosing to stay in RVs, cars or tents. Anyone who has been affected by the fires is welcome to stop by a shelter to get a hot meal and access other resources. Shelters for pets and livestock are available nearby.

FIND A SHELTER To find an open shelter, go to the nearest temporary evacuation point, visit redcross.org or view open shelters through the Red Cross Emergency app. If you don’t have access to a computer or smart phone, call 1-800-RED CROSS (800-733-2767) to be connected to your local chapter. Alternatively, try calling 211, if this service is available in your area, or your local emergency management office. If you are evacuating with pets, please consider contacting the Red Rover organization; they are equipped to help with arrangements for animals that need shelter or relocation: redrover.org.

FIND LOVED ONES If you are unable to locate or connect with a loved one who has been impacted by the wildfires, your local the Red Cross may be able to help you locate them. If your missing loved one is elderly, has a functional or access need, suffers from a medical or mental condition or has difficulty understanding the English language, you can reach out to your local Red Cross for assistance. If your loved one lived in the same home as you prior to the wildfire or is a member of the military community, please reach out to your local Red Cross for assistance.
