Manila Water capital spending hits P13.7B

Listed water concessionaire Manila Water Co. Inc. sees further improvements in its services after spending a record P13.7 billion in capital expenditure last year.

Manila Water said among the investments made is for intervening water sources critical to ensure water availability in the coming peak demand months during summer while major new water sources are still being built by the government.

It awarded 282 projects last year and aims to outperform 2021 figures with more spending and projects planned this year, but it did not provide a specific target.

Among them are the completion of deep wells with a total capacity of over 100 million liters per day; the East Bay water supply system project which will utilize Laguna Lake as source; the Calawis water supply system project which will treat and distribute water from the Upper Marikina watershed; the Marikina portable water treatment plant which will utilize Marikina River as a water source; and the Novaliches-Balara Aqueduct 4 project which entails the construction of a fourth aqueduct from the La Mesa Dam to the Balara treatment plants.

Manila Water also said it spent for the construction of new facilities and networks to expand service coverage, rehabilitation and improvement on existing assets and facilities for both water and wastewater, compliance projects relating to biological nutrient removal for wastewater facilities and the implementation of interim water source projects.

The company added it made major investmentsin the construction of more wastewater system projects including the Mandaluyong West sewerage system, HinulugangTaktak sewerage system with its sewage treatment plant (STP) being constructed in Antipolo City, San Mateo-Rodriguez sewerage system and the North and South Pasig sewerage system alongside the Ilugin STP.

“It is imperative for us to focus our capital spending to meet both our water supply and sewerage service obligations. Despite the challenges, we continue to serve more than 7 million people in the East Zone with safe and reliable water supply, covering over 1.3 million households and with more than 5,000 kilometers of network pipelines,” JV Emmanuel de Dios, Manila Water president and chief executive officer, said in a statement.

Manila Water mainly serves customers in Makati, Pasig, Pateros, Marikina, Mandaluyong, San Juan, Taguig, some parts of Quezon City and Manila; and several towns in Rizal province that include Taytay, Teresa, Angono, Antipolo, Baras, Binangonan, Cainta, San Mateo and Rodriguez.

It also has partnerships with water districts in Tagum, Davao del Norte; Bulacan; Clark;Calasiao, Pangasinan; San Jose, Nueva Ecija; Laguna; Boracay in Aklan; Cebu as well as with property developments through Estate Water.
